The Foo Fighters make a hell of an album in Studio 666, the latest from director BJ McDonnell.
When the rock band we know and love setting out to make their 10th album, they decide to hole up in a mansion until the writing and recording are complete. Sequestering a bunch of people until a job is done is a good way to drive them insane, but it turns out the house itself is anxious to help. Dave Grohl comes under its spell, and as every member completes their portion of the record, the possessed Grohl decides they no longer need to keep their blood in their bodies.
I suppose you can do what you want when you’re Dave Grohl, and what he wanted to do was make a horror-comedy after the real-life Foo Fighters recorded an album in a haunted house. The idea spun out from there, with Grohl receiving a story by credit and frequent Slayer video collaborator McDonnell taking the reins. Seems like the latter knows both music and filmmaking, so he should be able to shape this into something fun.
And fun is what this is really about. Yes, there’s horror and gore, but you can tell from this trailer that it’s pitched at a silly decibel. All the members of the Foo Fighters star (but they went with ghosts/demons instead of their titular aliens for the horror) with Jenna Ortega, Will Forte, and Leslie Grossman also appearing.
So get ready for a whole different kind of Foo Fighters project.
Studio 666 is directed by BJ McDonnell and stars Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. It will be released in the US on February 25th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
