STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Trailer

Straight Outta Compton

It’s your usual humble beginnings story. A group becomes rich and famous after enduring great hardship. That group is composed of rappers Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. There are actually other members but you’re more likely to know these names. Together they form N.W.A., one of the most notorious rap groups from the late 80’s and early 90’s. They go through issues such as racism, handling deadly assault weapons, and being targeted by police. All of that makes for a decent film but there is a gripe that is particularly biting. All the Caucasian supporting actors seem to just blindly support the group without understanding the music. “ …I don’t know anything about hip-hop but I know you’re special”.

Then we have Paul Giamatti defending them from police harassment by saying they’re artists. Validation of one’s identity as an artist is a great issue to address but it needs proper context. The whole scene looks so forced because of how it’s written. In response to Giamatti’s defense, one of the arresting officers say that “rap is not an art.” Who has this kind of conversation in the real world unless you’re in some coffee house?

Straight Outta Compton  is directed by Felix Gary Gray and stars O’Shea Jackson Jr, Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr.Dre and Eazy-E respectively. This film will be released August 14th 2015 for both the U.S and the U.K. Our German friends get to see it on August 13th 2015. There are currently no other release dates available.
