Throwing off the group dynamic could be deadly in Stowaway, the latest from co-writer/director Joe Penna.
Michael didn’t actually want to go to space. He worked on the ship as an engineer, but his life on the ground came with far too many commitments to disappear for years at a time. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where he ends up, accidentally stuck on a mission to Mars. After reality sets in, the crew must adapt to their new circumstances, if that’s even possible.
Being stuck in space is about as isolated as you can get, and with an extra person aboard the crew’s situation quickly becomes one of survival. Talk about a setup reminiscent of Penna’s previous feature, Arctic, which followed Mads Mikkelsen’s desperate bid for survival after a plane crash in, you guessed it, the Arctic. Penna was able to make that into a nifty little pressure cooker, and I see no reason why he couldn’t do the same here.
Like with Arctic he’s working with a small but excellent cast. Shamier Anderson (Wynona Earp) stars as the titular stowaway, with Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Toni Collette making up the rest of the crew. If a movie’s going to make you claustrophobically stuck with a small group, you can’t ask for better actors to lead you through, and you can’t ask for someone more willing to put you through the wringer than Penna.
Stowaway is directed by Joe Penna and stars Shamier Anderson, Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Toni Collette. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on April 22nd, 2021.
