STEP Documentary Trailer

The kids aren’t alright in the trailer for Step, a documentary following a group of high school seniors in inner-city Baltimore.

As turmoil engulfs the city, the girls must stay focused on school and their beloved step team. The former can get them to college and beyond, but it’s the latter that pays out here and now, providing them with the support and energy to make it through a critical time in their lives.

If this sounds like a gushy, feel-good tale, then you’re spot on about Step’s intent. It won the Inspirational Filmmaking award for documentaries at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and that slant is precisely what got the film a theatrical release in the U.S.

Distributor Fox Searchlight acquired the film with its adaptation rights, meaning Step will allow you to see the real-life story while Fox decides whether to make a slick, fictionalized version. We’ve all seen those after-school-programs-save-kids movies, but since Step wasn’t playing from a script, the challenges and competition these girls face won’t have tidy solutions.

That’s where the step team comes in. The entire practice is the antithesis of taking things lying down. These girls stomp, clap, and yell their passion into existence. Get how that could be inspirational?

Step is directed by Amanda Lipitz. It will be released in the U.S. on August 4th, 2017. Further release dates are not currently known.
