THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME Trailer

Watching the trailer for this film reminded me of the song ‘Ever Fallen in Love? (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)’ by the British punk rock band Buzzc*cks. Mila Kunis plays Audrey, a woman who has recently been dumped by her boyfriend. As if things aren’t bad enough, it turns out her ex Drew (Justin Theroux) is a spy who is being hunted by a group of assassins. Since Audrey and her friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon) have become targets as well, they decide to help Drew by delivering a package. As they head for Europe, a group of lethal assassins give chase.

The Spy Who Dumped Me seems like a fun look at the rough and tumble world of international espionage. One of the interesting things about this film will be the way in which it depicts Europe. American comedies have a tendency to either depict Europe in a stereotypical fashion or to ignore the locals and their culture in favor of moving the narrative forward. It would be nice to see a film that pays attention to the context in which the story takes place, especially since this creates all sorts of opportunities for jokes that cater to the people in the countries in which the scenes take place. Let’s hope The Spy Who Dumped Me did their homework and takes a chance.

The Spy Who Dumped Me is directed by Susanna Fogel and stars Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon, Sam Heughan and Gillian Anderson. It will be released in the U.K. on August 22nd, 2018 and in the U.S. on August 3rd, 2018. For international release dates click here.
