SPONTANEOUS Trailer

The kids are not all right in Spontaneous, the directorial debut of Brian Duffield.

They’re not okay because a bunch of high school kids are blowing up. Popping, as one character puts it as if a mysterious illness is spreading and causing the messy tragedies. In the meantime, they’re still teenagers, blithely going about their business with an invincibility that, in this case especially, is unfounded. In particular, Maya and Dylan seem unconcerned by these events since they’ve started up a romance just as everything is going downhill.

Adapting this odd story from the book of the same name was probably the comfortable step for Duffield, who’s been working on feature scripts for several years now. He’s written for big-budget projects like The Divergent Series: Insurgent and Underwater, so he gets the mechanics of teen movies and science fiction. The only question is whether he’s up for directing these stories.

He’s got a couple of great stars to lean on, with Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) and Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) playing the young lovers. Co-starring with them is Hayley Law, Piper Perabo, and Rob Huebel.

This tale of interrupted adolescence could go all sorts of ways, but hopefully, this group makes it into the fun romp it promises.

Spontaneous is directed by Brian Duffield and stars Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, and Hayley Law. It will be released in the US in theaters on October 2nd, 2020, and on-demand on October 6th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
