A new group is targeted in Spiral, a continuation of the Saw franchise.
The trend isn’t hard to put together because cops tend to notice when cops start dropping dead, particularly in gruesome ways. The detectives assigned to the case are able to link it to the murderous games that have happened previously, but one in particular gets a bit too obsessed with putting it to a stop. Getting too involved with this case brings an extra element of danger, though, as it would be easy to slide right into one of the culprit’s elaborate traps.
At this point, we all know what the Saw franchise has to offer: sadistic games and gory deaths. It doesn’t look like Spiral is reinventing the wheel, especially with frequent series director Darren Lynn Bousman returning along with the Jigsaw writing duo of Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
The flashy newcomer in this case is Chris Rock, who portrays the obsessed detective, executive produces, and gets a story credit. He must love the Saw franchise to dive in this deep, and with him comes Samuel L. Jackson as a senior detective and Max Minghella as his rookie partner.
With that kind of star power, it looks like the long-running franchise is getting a turbo charge. Hopefully that leads to more of what the fans want.
Spiral is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and stars Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Max Minghella. It will be released in the US and the UK on May 15th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
