SOUL Trailer

Death might not be so permanent in Soul, the latest from acclaimed animation studio Pixar.

Joe’s life was just starting to look up. After years teaching music to less than spectacular middle schoolers, he finally landed a gig that’ll allow him to actually play the music he loves. In his excitement, he gets into a bit of an accident, one where his soul leaves his body and starts heading towards the afterlife. In a fit of defiance, he slips away and travels the non-living worlds with an unborn soul trying to find a way back.

Any Pixar movie will have lofty expectations, and with Pete Docter (UpInside Out) writing and directing Soul, it’s hard to imagine excitement being any higher. As per Pixar’s usual strategy, he’s paired here with rising co-director and co-writer Kemp Powers, who has written for the TV series Star Trek: Discovery.

This also marks the first time a Pixar film will have a black lead, something that took an embarrassingly long time to happen. Jamie Foxx landed that coveted voice roll, with Tina Fey tagging along as his infant sidekick.

Now the character looks to be a bodiless entity most of the time, a tiresome thing to do with this milestone character, but hopefully the movie will otherwise rise to the occasion.

Soul is directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers. Its voice cast includes Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, and Questlove. It will be released in the US and the UK on June 19th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
