SONG TO SONG Trailer

Remember waiting years and years for a new Terrence Malick film? The 2010s have made that a distance memory thanks to his newfound productivity, with Song to Song marking his fifth film of the decade.
Previously titled Weightless, the project has more notable cast members than I can list, so suffice it to say that Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman are receiving top billing. How much screen time the actors will really get is always a mystery with Malick, who might get distracted by the Austin rock scene that the film moves through. It’s been confirmed that musicians like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence and the Machine, and Patti Smith make appearances, and performances by those kinds of musicians might prove more striking than the romantic dalliances seen in the trailer.
The setting makes it an obvious choice for the South by Southwest film festival, where it will premiere on opening night. Malick’s penchant for finding his films in editing means we don’t actually know what Song to Song will be about, with further confusion coming from its long time in post-production (it was filmed so long ago that Christian Bale had scheduling conflicts with American Hustle) and reports of the actors being brought back for voice-over work years later. In Malick’s world, though, that’s a relatively short period of time, and now we have a definite end date for all the tinkering.
Song to Song is directed by Terrence Malick and stars Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, and Michael Fassbender. It will be released in the U.S. on March 17th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
