SOMEONE GREAT Trailer

Gina Rodriguez wants one more wild night in Someone Great, the feature debut of writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Turning 30 feels like a game changer for most people, but Rodriguez’s Jenny has upped the ante by adding a cross-country move and a devastating breakup to the mix. In a spiral, she asks her best friends to go out with her one last time, and things inevitably get out of hand. Of course, these movies are rarely just about crazy shenanigans, and the trailer makes it clear that their will be some friend-fueled pathos along the way.
This is the kind of movie that is traditionally reserved for the boys, so it’s unsurprising to find a woman behind the gender flip. Robinson is green, though, with the only major credit to her name being the creator of the television series Sweet/Vicious. Lucky for her, Netflix has become a haven for young filmmakers with oddball ideas, and with them picking it up, it has a chance to find a big audience.
Having a recognizable face like Rodriguez in the lead should help it stand out, even with her buddies being played by less known actresses Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise. Luckily it’s not entirely hinging on Rodriguez, though, as you probably immediately registered Lakeith Stanfield as her ex and apparently Rosario Dawson is around somewhere. Hopefully their names and the easily digestible genre will make people take a chance on this.
Someone Great is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and stars Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on April 19th, 2019.
