SNAKE EYES Trailer

A fighter’s origins are revealed in Snake Eyes, a continuation of the G.I. Joe film series.

Most iterations of G.I. Joe have left the character’s background a mystery, so he’s an interesting choice to kick off an origins series for the military group (if that’s truly what they intend). Here, we see an already prone to violence Snake Eyes recruited into Clan Arashikage, who will presumably teach him many of the character’s trademark fighting skills. Along the way he meets several of the pivotal characters in his world, including Storm Shadow and Scarlett.

As a sort of reboot to the film series, which only had two entries and ended in 2013, the movie will likely lean more heavily on the comic books and TV series that have built a huge world around the Hasbro toy line. Henry Golding steps into the title role, a major departure from his rom-com background, and is backed up by the likes of Andrew Koji, Samara Weaving, and Úrsula Corberó.

With another movie in the works, it seems like Snake Eyes is already a cog in a very large machine. G.I. Joe is a behemoth media entity dating back to the ’60s, of course, but films have never been its strong suit, and one wonders if these movies will be given the leeway to find themselves in the medium. Bringing on workmanlike director Robert Schwentke (RedR.I.P.D) doesn’t do much to assuage these concerns, but at least we’ll finally see for ourselves after the movie’s long delay thanks to COVID.

Snake Eyes is directed by Robert Schwentke and stars Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, and Samara Weaving. It will be released in the US on July 23rd, 2021 and in the UK on August 18th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
