SKATE KITCHEN Trailer

Girls on skateboards are still notable exceptions in 2018, which is why the all-female crew at the center of Skate Kitchen drew a camera to their lives.
Co-writer and director Crystal Moselle came upon the real-life group in New York City, much like she stumbled upon the movie-obsessed brothers from her documentary The Wolfpack, but this time she put an original narrative around her subjects. It’s the usual kaleidoscope of teen girl drama (a disapproving parent, a close-knit group of friends, boy trouble), but it’s all captured in a vérité style, indicating Moselle wasn’t ready to completely break with her documentary roots.
The film stars the real members of the skate group, all non-actors giving this filmmaking thing a go. Rachelle Vinberg is the main star and audience surrogate as the young woman joining the crew, but all seem to have prominent parts in this ensemble effort. As is customary, Jaden Smith has been brought in for some name recognition, but he’ll likely take a backseat in this female-centric story.
The film represents quite a turn for Moselle, but according to early festival showings, it’s another rousing success. The movie’s lo-fi nature probably means it won’t get the largest release, but this is one you’ll want to track down.
Skate Kitchen is directed by Crystal Moselle and stars Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, and Jaden Smith. It will be released in the US on August 10th, 2018 and in the UK on September 28th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
