Keanu Reeves just can’t quit action movies, and we just can’t quit watching them. How are we supposed to when his vampiric style of aging means he’s still so good at them? That’s the basic appeal of the crime movie Siberia, which would feel like a much more minor film without Reeves headlining.
The premise sets up a bit of a chiller, with Reeves’ Lucas caught up in a bad diamond trade deep in the Siberian cold. There’s a con to sort out and a romance distracting our hero before the action really takes off, but it looks like there will eventually be plenty of violence to satisfy fans.
It’s familiar territory for director Matthew Ross, whose previous film, Frank & Lola, was also a crime thriller with a romance subplot. Even writer Scott B. Smith is staying within his comfort zone, having earned an Oscar nomination back in the ’90s for his work on the bitterly cold crime film A Simple Plan.
The benefit of having everyone stick so close to their roots is that they’re unlikely to stray down wrong paths, meaning Siberia will almost certainly be a solid little thriller. That should be enough to tide over rabid Reeves fans until the next John Wick entry.
Siberia is directed by Matthew Ross and stars Keanu Reeves, Ana Ularu, and Pasha D. Lychnikoff. It will be released in the US on July 13th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
