Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother, man? … SHAFT – Can ya dig it?

It’s been almost 2 decades since John Singleton‘s Shaft which was the fourth film in a series which started in the early ’70s. Shaft was one of the keystone films in the so-called Blaxploitation genre which was hugely popular during the 1970s.

The latest film in the series introduces a younger generation of the Shaft family in John Shaft Jr. (Jessie Usher). When one of his friends is murdered he enlists his father John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson) and the original John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) to solve the case.

Shaft has been one of the most popular figures in Blaxploitation ever since the first film came out. It’ll be interesting to see how a younger generation of viewers reacts to a character which they have probably only heard of through references in films, music and TV.

One of the more interesting things about this trailer is the James Bond reference. Especially considering the fact Shaft is probably the closest thing to a Black James Bond we’ve seen in cinema. One of the exciting things about this film is that if things work out this could launch a whole new era of Shaft films in the same way the Creed films have revitalized the Rocky franchise.

Shaft is directed by Tim Story and stars Jessie Usher, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree and Regina Hall.

Shaft will be released worldwide on June 14th, 2019. The film will be released through Netflix in countries around the world except for the U.S. where the film will be released theatrically.
