SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Trailer

Horrifying tales comes come to life in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the latest from director André Øvredal.

The popular book series of the same name has been chilling kids since the ’80s when the first of its three short story collections were released. To pull these disparate tales under one narrative, the film adaptation came up with a cursed book, one that brings the stories to life when a group of teens discover the tome hidden in a supposedly haunted house. As kids go missing and chaos reigns, the teens must figure out how to stop the monsters and lock the book away once again.

Trying to reign in this potentially uneven project is an impressive team of horror aficionados, with the family-friendly writing duo of Dan and Kevin Hageman (The Lego MovieTrollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) teaming up with none other than Guillermo del Toro to write the script. Even stranger is Øvredal at the helm, who’s best known for his cult hit Trollhunter.

That group will have to be careful of its young cast, who have had small parts here and there but have never had to shoulder a project. Zoe Margaret Colletti gets top billing here, and her co-stars include Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, and Lorraine Toussaint. The conglomerate of stories should make for some creepy moments, but the question here is whether a cohesive story can tie them all together. With the team behind it, though, hopes should be high.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is directed by André Øvredal and stars Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, and Gabriel Rush. It will be released in the US on August 9th, 2019 and in the UK on August 23rd, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
