The world is under a floofy but serious attack in Save Yourselves!, the feature debut of writing and directing team Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.
Su and Jack are not prepared for this. No one is, really, but as a couple of very plugged in millennials who can barely boil a pot of water without grabbing their phones, they need the modern, functional world to survive. Realizing the unhealthy grip technology has on them, they embark on a weekend in the woods with no phones or computers, hoping for a bit of a lifestyle reset. They get way more of a reset than they anticipated when mysterious balls of floof start appearing everywhere, and they quickly realize they are stranded right as aliens are invading.
It’s part social satire and part science fiction in this strange romp, a debut that sees Fischer and Wilson definitely not playing it safe. It will be difficult to hit the breezy but sharp tone the trailer promises without getting too silly, but at least they had the good sense to keep this relatively contained. Yes, there’s an alien invasion, but it looks like this is contained to a two-hander, with familiar faces Sunita Mani and John Reynolds playing the stranded couple.
The film’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival went over swimmingly, with reviews praising its breezy style and oddball rom-com charm. In our dire world, maybe it will be nice to see others hilariously struggling, too.
Save Yourselves! is directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson and stars Sunita Mani and John Reynolds. It will be released in the US in theaters on October 2nd, 2020, and on-demand on October 6th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
