The ex takes center stage in Rosaline, the latest from director Karen Maine.

We all know Romeo and Juliet, the young lovers whose relationship is doomed by their warring families. It is the Shakespeare story, and we can all quote it and retell the basic plot from memory. What many people forget is that Romeo had a love interest before Juliet, Rosaline. In this version, the forgotten crush moves into the spotlight, reframing the classic love story as a vengeful romcom where Rosaline will do anything to break up the couple and get Romeo back.

Taking inspiration from Romeo and Juliet (obviously) and the YA book When You Were Mine, this melds earnest, timeless love and jealous shenanigans. It should be right in Maine’s wheelhouse, as her debut feature, Yes, God, Yes, followed an innocent Christian teen learning about sex and desire for the first time. It was funny, kind of raunchy, and seems to be in much the same vein as Rosaline.

The film stars a bevy of young actors you know or are about to know, with the title role going to the ever great Kaitlyn Dever. Meanwhile, Romeo and Juliet are played by Kyle Allen (He-Man in the upcoming Master of the Universe) and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), respectively.

With a strong team putting a new spin on a familiar story, Rosaline should be a good time.

Rosaline is directed by Karen Maine and stars Kaitlyn Dever, Kyle Allen, and Isabela Merced. It will be released on Hulu October 14th.
