Who is the best football player in the world? No one can answer that with certainty. Of course, this is about modern football’s greatest rivals, Argentinian Lionel Messi and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo. Avid football fans might go deeper and say this is a rivalry between natural talent and hard work.
In the past five years, the two have been showered with prestigious awards, most importantly, they have both been awarded the much-coveted Ballon D’Or. They are on a different level than any other football player, and of course, there is great competition between the two. This rivalry is not just about football skills, but popularity, too. In mid-2014, Messi got one over his rival when film director Alex de la Iglesia made him the subject of the self-titled documentary Messi. This year, Ronaldo got the chance to settle the score with the also self-titled documentary Ronaldo.
Ronaldo tells the tale of the football legend’s rapid ascent to the top of the game. The trailer promises an apt portrayal of the football player: his charming c*ckiness and unmatched winning mentality is clear from the start. However, below this c*cky character hides a family man. Near the end of the trailer we see footage of him playing with his son Cristiano Jr., interspersed with old images of Ronaldo’s youth, which is contradictory to the live he leads now.
Ronaldo explores how the 30-year-old star manages to balance his glamorous football career and popularity, as well as family life. What will be even more interesting is to hear about Ronaldo’s personal take on Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo is directed by Anthony Wonke. It will be released in the U.K. on November 9th, 2015. International release dates can be found here .
Tell me what you think of Ronaldo? Do you think it will be as critically-acclaimed as his rival’s Messi’s documentary?
