ROLLING PAPERS Trailer

The fading of print news and the rise of legal marijuana in the United States meets in the festival documentary Rolling Papers, but this clever intersection might not be its main selling point. The trailer plays up a jaunty, engaging style, and the world it explores looks filled with good-natured, quirky folks.

Characters make or break this kind of society-exploring documentary, and it seems that Rolling Papers will deliver on that front. Add in some slick editing and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and this becomes the kind of fun documentary that could appeal to a wider audience.

The actual story of a major newspaper appointing a marijuana editor is interesting in and of itself, naturally opening up thematic parallels and giving this story somewhere tangible to go. It remains to be seen if the film will successfully take us there, but it sure looks like a ride worth getting on. I mean, who wouldn’t chuckle at the term ‘pot journalism’?

Rolling Papers is directed by Mitch Dickman. It is released in the U.S. on February 19th, 2016. International release dates have not been announced.
