Follow Hugh Jackman’s voice back in time in Reminiscence, the feature debut of writer/director Lisa Joy.

In a dark future where environmental catastrophes have given way to devastating wars, a doctor has come up with a procedure that lets people revisit gentler times. It’s not without its risks, but many find the respite worth the dangers. Through the service, the doctor meets a woman who sweeps him off his feet, and when she disappears as quickly and mysteriously as she appeared his procedure might be the very thing to help him find her again.

This promises to be a twisty tale with a romance to anchor it to reality. A complicated story for a first-time filmmaker, to be sure, but Joy is no strange to heady stories. As the co-creator of Westworld, she’s been bending minds for a while now, and it will be interesting to see how she condenses that kind of story to a feature-length project.

Given that the project has someone as impressive as Joy behind it, it’s no wonder it was able to attract a solid cast. Jackman stars as the lovelorn doctor while Rebecca Ferguson is the woman who turns his life upside down. In addition to those two, Thandiwe Newton follows Joy over from Westworld.

Basically, if you’re the type who likes your brain to be battered around, Reminiscence sounds like a movie for you.

Reminiscence is directed by Lisa Joy and stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, and Thandiwe Newton. It will be released in the US in theaters and on HBO Max on August 20th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
