RELIC Trailer

Grandma’s not doing well in Relic, the feature debut of co-writer/director Natalie Erika James.

Edna had been fine on her own, busying herself keeping up the family home. That is until she called her daughter Kay complaining about mysterious events. Kay and her own daughter decide it’s time to check up on grandma, but once they get to the house the matriarch is nowhere to be found. After an extensive search, Edna just reappears on her own, but that’s far from the end of the family’s problems. The strange things Edna’s been complaining about started happening to the other women in the family, throwing any sense of reality out the window.

This looks like a good old tale of psychological horror, one where you can’t be sure what is or isn’t actually happening. That also usually means a slow burn, which could be a difficult pace to pull off for newcomer James.

But there are two great signs to ward off any uncertainty about the first-time filmmaker: an excellent cast and raves out of its festival premiere. I mean, getting Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote to portray this three-generation freak out makes it immediately intriguing, and its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival was met with universal acclaim. All indications are that this one shouldn’t be missed.

Relic is directed by Natalie Erika James and stars Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, and Bella Heathcote. It will be released in the US in drive-in theaters only on July 3rd, 2020, and on-demand on July 10th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
