RBG Trailer

With Ruth Bader Ginsberg becoming something of a pop culture icon, it was only a matter of time before the film industry turned their cameras towards the lively octogenarian. In fact, two films about Ginsberg are in the pipeline, with the documentary RBG beating the fictional take to release.

Notorious RBG, as the internet likes to call her, is the second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court, and for a period between 2006 and 2009 she was the only woman at the highest level of the judicial branch. Somehow being noticeably different and standing up for issues like gender equality and gay marriage made her into the unlikely icon she is now, a position she has embraced with the same good-natured sense of humor with which the attention started.

As immediately intriguing as her professional life is, so much of Ginsberg’s popularity stems from her life away from the court, which this documentary will be delving into in a way that seems reminiscent of last year’s Jane. The trailer promises a great love affair and the tale of a long life spent of battling expectations, right down to a workout program that she continues to this day (and probably puts my sedentary life to shame). So while RBG comes along at a great time for highlighting powerful women, it also offers far more than eye-catching memes to examine.

RBG is directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West. It will be released in the US on May 4th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
