THE PURGE Trailer

This post is outdated. Read our review of The Purge here.

A family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.

From the ratings, it looks like The Purge isn’t going to be a particularly good movie. I want to see it though – the trailer had me all giddy. That’s because of the concepts they (attempt?) to share, here.

It’s pretty typical dystopian sci-fi stuff to show a “perfect” world where crime is near to non-existent, but have a really bad down side to it. But what’s interesting…

purgeThe whole notion of the Purge to me speaks of an idea we have of crime: that it can be cured. This Purge night is supposed to be such an effective cure that it stops people from committing crimes for the rest of the year – as if crime is committed “just because”, and not because someone may actually be pushed to it out of dire need.

I digress though – I’ll definitely dig deeper in some of The Purge’s concepts (like the in-house surveillance equipment shown) once I’ve seen it. I’m not a fan of horror usually, but at least there’s no ghosts in it.

One thing that really bugs me though – and this is me being very nitpicky… How can crime be at an “all-time low”? I’m sure they mean crime rates or crime levels (which are really hard to measure, by the way).

(And am I the only one who can only see Lena Headey as Cersei now?)

The Purge is shown in theaters from June 7, 2013.
