In Snowpiercer, humanity has tried to “fix” global warming, but instead, they screwed up and brought forth a new ice age which killed most of humanity. What remains of humanity lives on a perpetual-motion train. In this bleak, dystopian future, the inhabitants of the train are strongly divided, the poor and lower class live in the back, the upper class live in the front of the train, who are, by the way, led by the magnificent Tilda Swinton. The poor no longer agree to this situation, and decide to revolt. Chris Evans (Captain America) leads the revolt, and hopes to change the future.
The visuals are quite stunning and the movie boasts a great cast; aside from Evans and Swinton, Alison Pill, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer and Ed Harris are part of it. However, it
It doesn’t help that there are currently already so many of this type of dystopian sci-fi movie critical of society either on the market right now or coming to it soon. To mention a few: Elysium, The Hunger Games movies, even Divergent to a certain extent. Isn’t it also slightly ironic they have John Hurt on the team?
What does make the movie more appealing and interesting in my opinion is that it’s directed by South Korean Bong Joon-ho. There are some Korean influences already clearly visible in the movie as there is a Korean character, but we will see how much Joon-ho has tried to Americanize this movie. I personally love Asian filmmaking, so that would be awesome. If the Animated Prequel is any indication, I think we can at least expect some Asian-style violence.
