POWER RANGERS Teaser Trailer

‘90s nostalgia is in full swing, and with that comes a reboot of the so-terrible-it’s-good television series Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. To many, myself included, the series is a goofy relic of childhood, a cheap mashup of footage from a Japanese superhero program with California teen clichés. With memories of the original series firmly intact, this teaser leaves me wondering where the hell the Power Rangers are.

The reboot has taken many liberties, including dropping the ‘mighty’ and ‘morphin’ from the title and injecting everything with a bit of gloom. That’s the way many of these revamps have played out recently, and to be honest, a lot of changes needed to be made if the studio was going to recoup their over $100 million budget.

The whole series is too knowingly weird to work as a mainstream blockbuster, and since the nostalgia brand aims to get new kids on board and adult fans in seats, Power Rangers had to be retooled for widespread appeal. Nowadays, audiences are used to outcast teens discovering remarkable abilities, which is exactly what this teaser is playing up.

Later marketing should include flourishes that are more recognizably of the Power Rangers series, like Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader’s Zordon and Alpha 5. We do get bits of martial arts moves thrown in, but no word yet if the excited vogue hands will remain (I’m not holding out hope). Until then, this knowingly generic teaser will have to suffice.

Power Rangers is directed by Dean Israelite. It stars Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Becky G., and Ludi Lin. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on March 24th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
