A stylish graphic novel comes to life in Polar, and everyone will be able to see it thanks to a worldwide release on Netflix.
In the film, a hitman has made it to retirement, but instead of letting him slide through his twilight years, the organization he used to work for decides he’s better off dead. Fighting through waves of less experienced assassins isn’t how the poor guy wanted to spend his time, but he grudgingly takes on the murderous hoard after his young neighbor gets caught up in the fight. It’s a setup that should lead to some breathless action, which is the centerpiece of this packed trailer.
The straightforward story means this film will live or die on its approach, which is why director Jonas Åkerlund seems like a good fit for the material. Most of his work has been in music videos, particularly with pop stars that let their videos get a little bombastic. That kind of punchy energy should help him capture the noir-infused style of the film’s source material.
Headlining is Mads Mikkelsen, whose grizzled persona has translated well to violent tales in the past. A less obvious choice is Disney Channel alum Vanessa Hudgens as his neighbor, but it’s important to remember that she’s taken on plenty of adult material before. She’s got a Harmony Korine film under her belt after all, so she should be fine here.
With a Netflix release, Polar will be an easy film to track down, but it will have to be as distinctive as its source material to stand out.
Polar is directed by Jonas Åkerlund and stars Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, and Katheryn Winnick. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on January 25th, 2019.
