PHANTOM THREAD Trailer

The mysterious new movie from Paul Thomas Anderson finally has a title and a trailer, but that’s only the start of the intrigue surrounding Phantom Thread.

The film, which apparently is about an obsessive dressmaker in 1950s London, will make an Oscar qualifying run at the end of 2017, but with the movie skipping all festivals, it’s a rare case of modern cinephiles being driven into a frenzy by lack of knowledge. This release ‘strategy’ was addressed in a recent EW interview with Anderson himself (turns out the film just wasn’t finished), as were several of the other bizarre reports about Phantom Thread.

The much-delayed title reveal? Apparently just “a case of wishy-washiness.” Anderson serving as his own director of photography? It was actually a group effort and there will be no director of photography credit on the film. Setting Phantom Thread far away from his comfortably familiar California? The writer/director seemed to think this was a straightforward development.

But the biggest bombshell about Phantom Thread can’t be addressed by Anderson. No, the announcement that it will be Daniel Day-Lewis’ last film must be clarified by the actor himself, and he isn’t talking.

So we are left waiting again, hoping that Anderson makes the couture world into a stunning film and that we can applaud Day-Lewis one more time. Really, though, these are safe assumptions, and we only need to wait a little longer to see them realized.

Phantom Thread is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Daniel Day-LewisLesley Manville, and Vicky Krieps. It will be released in the U.S. on December 25th, 2017 and in the U.K. on February 2nd, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
