PARASITE Trailer

Class warfare leads to a peculiar con in Parasite, the latest from co-writer and director Bong Joon-ho.

The Kim family has been coasting for some time, scrounging together what they need without really putting forth too much effort. That is, until their son stumbles upon a cushy tutoring gig for the wealthy Park family. Sensing an opportunity, the Kim family pounces on the unsuspecting Parks, slowly putting their claws into what they think is easy prey. From that setup the direction of Parasite would seem obvious, but this is Bong, and nothing ever goes as expected in his films.

Word from the film’s festival run is that it’s best to go in with as little plot information as possible, so hopefully none of that gave too much away. I think most film fans are willing to take a leap of faith based on Bong’s name alone, who has carved out a unique place for himself with films like Memories of MurderThe HostSnowpiercer, and Okja.

Parasite reunites Bong with frequent star Song Kang-ho, and given that history, at least he should be able to handle Bong’s strange mix of tones. Uninitiated co-stars like Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, and Choi Woo-shik will need to show off remarkable range to make it all work, and luckily, word from its festival run is that it does come together. In fact, it was a unanimous Palm d’Or winner at Cannes, so it looks like this shouldn’t be missed.

Parasite is directed by Bong Joon-ho and stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, and Cho Yeo-jeong. It will be released in the US on October 11th, 2019 and in the UK on February 7th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
