PARALLEL MOTHERS Trailer

Pedro Almodóvar plays the hits in Parallel Mothers.

We all know Almodóvar loves to ruminate on moms, and this time he’s come up with a way to examine two at once. Janis and Ana become linked when they give birth on the same day in the same hospital. Janis is the more excited one, seizing a late in life opportunity to be a mom, while Ana is little more than a scared kid herself. Their bond extends outside the hospital, becoming entwined in each other’s lives as they navigate very different versions of motherhood.

Reports from its festival run are that this is on the breezy end of writer/director Almodóvar’s output, but even if that’s true, an Almodóvar is still an Almodóvar. He’s one of the best in the business, and seeing him return to one of his favorite topics while relishing his trademark stylistic flair is bound to be a delight.

Just as sure a bet is his pairing with Penélope Cruz. For their seventh outing together she plays the mother seemingly more prepared for her life to be turned upside down, but expect Almodóvar to throw in plenty of curveballs for Cruz to sink her teeth into. Paired with her is Milena Smit in only her second feature.

A green actor, even in a major role, is hardly cause for concern when she’s got such sturdy vets around her. Strong reviews from its festival run only confirms what we already know: that this is one to see.

Parallel Mothers is directed by Pedro Almodóvar and stars Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit, and Israel Elejalde. It will be released in the US on December 24th, 2021 and in the UK on January 28th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
