England’s favorite marmalade-loving bear journeys into the wild jungles of Peru, in the first trailer for the animated comedy threequel Paddington In Peru.
Having firmly settled into life in England, Paddington Bear (Ben Whishaw) and his adopted human family (Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer) return to the wild jungles of Peru to visit Paddington’s elderly aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton).
However, upon arrival, they learn that Aunt Lucy has set off into the Amazon Rainforest in search of treasure. Now, with the help of a kooky nun (Olivia Colman), a suave local boat captain (Antonio Banderas) and his trusty marmalade sandwich, Paddington sets off on a grand adventure to find the family member he left behind so long ago.
From the looks of the trailer, Paddington In Peru widens the scope of the Paddington-verse but loses none of the winsome charm that cemented the 1st two films as modern animated classics. Blending the trademark vaudevillian comedy of the franchise with a hefty dose of Indiana Jones-esque globetrotting adventure, Paddington In Peru promises a grand story with a level of spectacle unseen in the franchise thus far.
Whishaw continues to deliver as an underrated comedic voice actor, lending the titular character a personality of equal parts kookiness and dithering formality. But the supporting cast also continues to hold their own, and with comedic heavyweight Colman joining the cast, Paddington In Peru promises to be a comedic riot.
As a Yank, I didn’t grow up with the Paddington source material like my neighbors across the pond. But producer Paul King and directing newcomer Dougal Wilson have done an outstanding job showcasing one of England’s cultural institutions on a blockbuster stage.
Directed by Dougal Wilson, Paddington In Peru will release theatrically in the US in late 2024. The movie stars Ben Whishaw reprising his role as Paddington Bear.
