OUT STEALING HORSES Trailer

The past refuses to be forgotten in Out Stealing Horses, the latest from writer/director Hans Petter Moland.
With life winding down, Trond decides to move out of the big city and while away what time he has left in a quiet village. Those plans are upended, though, when he stumbles upon a childhood friend long forgotten, and suddenly memories of their time together as teenage boys come rushing back. With it comes to regret, solace, and all the other emotions of a life lived, just as he’s trying to let it slip away.
This looks to be a thoughtful, plaintive film, which would be in sharp contrast to Moland’s previous work. He’s coming off Cold Pursuit, an English-language adaptation of his own crime thriller, In Order of Disappearance. Most of his movies have been along those lines, so a pivot to quiet, reflective material is quite a surprise.
What hasn’t changed is his leading man, with frequent collaborator Stellan Skarsgård headlining. Skarsgård can certainly pull off whatever material is put in front of him (except maybe that fat suit in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), and with the promise of their fruitful collaboration and strong reviews from its festival run, Out Stealing Horses looks like one to search out when it finally releases.
Out Stealing Horses is directed by Hans Petter Moland and stars Stellan Skarsgård, Bjørn Floberg, and Tobias Santelmann. It will be released in the US on August 7th, 2020 (maybe, as with all release dates now). Keep up to date with the current release schedule here.
