NINE DAYS Trailer

Get contemplative with Winston Duke in Nine Days, the feature debut of writer/director Edson Oda.

What precisely is going on in this trailer feels vague despite the very clear opening line, which is meant literally: Duke’s Will is testing souls for the opportunity to become human. So chill, not at all existential stuff is going down at his house in the middle of nowhere (again literally, the house exists in some pre-life place). What the tests are we don’t see, but we know that it will take nine days, that the candidates get to see the goings-on of Earth while it’s happening, and that not all of them are excited about the prospect of living with us.

It’s a hell of a concept to make into a first film (this time not literally, because hell comes after life), but Oda has a long list of well-received shorts that have prepared him to take such a big swing.

And it seems like that swing paid off, with Oda attracting a top-notch cast for his pondering of life. In addition to Duke, Zazie Beetz plays the soul seemingly at the forefront of Will’s attention while Benedict Wong, Bill Skarsgård, and Tony Hale play other candidates.

Considering it won a screenplay award and got a string of good reviews at Sundance, Nine Days seems like the kind of heady film many people love.

Nine Days is directed by Edson Oda and stars Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, and Bill Skarsgård. It will be released in the US on July 30th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
