NEWS OF THE WORLD Trailer

A storyteller creates his own story in News of the World, the latest from co-writer/director Paul Greengrass.

Captain Jefferson Kidd has seen plenty of things in his day, from the horrors of the American Civil War to the strange events one encounters traveling from town to town bringing stories from afar. Even with all that experience, he can’t turn his back when he comes across a young girl seemingly alone in the wilderness. She had been kidnapped by the Kiowa people and her family killed, her only kin left a faraway aunt and uncle. He decides to deliver the girl safely to them, embarking on a journey worthy of a place among his tales.

It’s all the trappings of a classic Western for Greengrass, the latest in a string of filmmakers from across the pond taking on the very American genre. Greengrass has done plenty of action with the Bourne series and dipped into the American psyche with United 93, so the genre should be comfortable for him.

Tom Hanks is the captain now (again?) for Greengrass, which basically means that this movie is instantly watchable. Co-starring with him as the young girl is Helena Zengel.

The reteaming of Greengrass and Hanks (if you missed the reference, they did Captain Phillips together) in such a sturdy genre should make this one to watch.

News of the World is directed by Paul Greengrass and stars Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel. It will be released in theaters in the US on December 25th, 2020, and internationally on Netflix sometime in 2021. Stay up to date with its release schedule here.
