NEW ORDER Trailer

The latest provocation from writer/director Michel Franco is here in New Order.
From what I see in this trailer, the re-order seems to be a class-based one. We see a lavish wedding, presumably one hosted by a wealthy family, being interrupted by armed people scaling the property walls. Soon chaos breaks out, with the masses revolting and members of the wedding party just trying to survive.
As per usual with Franco, the film looks violent, unflinching, and like a minefield in terms of messaging. It received pushback in its home country of Mexico, where people noted that the protestors were largely dark-skinned while the elites were light-skinned. And that’s just one of the many ways the film could go wrong as it navigates a world in which many are rightfully protesting a host of wrongs.
But Franco has never been one to shy away from complicated material. A regular on the European festival circuit, where he draws frequent comparisons to Michael Haneke, previous films like Chronic and After Lucia have racked up as many awards as controversies. He’s noted for turning a cold stare at things most people look away from, and that can lead to confusion about what he’s trying to say about difficult topics. So, if you have the stomach for such films (and can hash out whether the his gaze is harmful or righteous), then you might want to give New Order a try.
New Order is directed by Michel Franco and stars Naian Gonzalez Norvind, Diego Boneta, and Mónica Del Carmen. It will be released in the US on May 21st, 2021 and in the UK on June 25th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
