NEVER, RARELY,SOMETIMES, ALWAYS Trailer

Two girls go on a trip neither of them wanted in Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always, the latest from writer/director Eliza Hittman.

Skylar and Autumn have pretty uneventful lives in small town Pennsylvania. They go to school, work as cashiers, and blow off steam with their friends. Pretty chill, at least until Autumn gets pregnant, and thanks to America’s abortion laws, they’re forced to go to New York City for help. Neither can afford it, of course, so the trip is cobbled together and very much played by ear, forcing both of them to confront the knife’s edge their lives are perched upon.

With the recent push towards restrictive abortion laws in the US, many filmmakers are turning their attention to the plight this puts women and girls in. This one has a real chance to stand out thanks to Hittman, whose previous feature, Beach Rats, showed a masterful ability to dig into the psyche of her characters. That movie was, at times, uncomfortably intimate, so if anyone is really going to capture the small-scale tragedies that occur thanks to these new laws, it’s Hittman.

She’s once again relying on unknowns for her leads, with Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder portraying the two teenagers. Neither have many previous credits, but I’m not alarmed by this. Hittman has found diamonds before, so I trust she’ll use these raw actors to add to the everyday drama this film promises.

Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always is directed by Eliza Hittman and stars Sidney Flanigan, Talia Ryder, and Théodore Pellerin. It will be released in the US on March 13th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
