MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL SINKING INTO THE SEA Trailer

A long title for a brief film, My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea establishes its plot before the audience enters the theater. Yes, it’s literally about a high school sinking into the sea, and if the trailer is any indication, that’s only the start of this movie’s off-kilter look at teenage life.

With trophies causing head wounds and the lunch lady (voiced by Susan Sarandon) becoming integral to survival, there’s plenty of nods to the traditional high school hierarchy being upended, but I guess you still need buff arms to get the popular girl. Its those kinds of odd moments coupled with the bright animation that really captures your attention here, bringing to mind an array of influences while still feeling wholly unique.

The film is the first feature for writer/director Dash Shaw, who’s primarily worked in comic books but has also participated in the Sundance Institute Writers and Directors Labs and collaborated with Sigur Ros and John Cameron Mitchell on the short Seraph. It’s his comics, though, that got him in contact with Jason Schwartzman, who voices the eponymous main character. With an odd assortment of stars in the voice cast, there’s clearly something everyone saw in Shaw’s work, and the finished product looks to be anything but standard.

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea is directed by Dash Shaw and stars Jason Schwartzman, Lena Dunham, and Reggie Watts. It will be released in the U.S. in Spring 2017. Further release dates aren’t currently known.
