MUTE Trailer

Netflix is bringing more science fiction into our homes with Mute, the latest from writer/director Duncan Jones.

The film will follow a mute bartender (hence the title) through a Blade Runner-inspired city as he searches for his missing girlfriend, a journey that will put him in all sorts of seedy situations along the way. Alexander Skarsgård stars as the silent hero with Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux (who I totally thought was Mark Duplass) appearing as morally inscrutable doctors.

Jones is coming off a setback after his foray into big-budget filmmaking, Warcraft, belly-flopped commercially and critically, but he’s still got a lot of good will with filmgoers thanks to his earlier movies. Moon and Source Code were modestly budgeted science fiction films that brimmed with ambition, much more in line with what Mute appears to be.

In fact, Jones has referred to Mute as a spiritual sequel to Moon, and there’s rumors that Sam Rockwell’s character from the latter movie might appear. That could just be wishful thinking, but it’s indicative of the high hopes people have for MuteJones still has a reputation for making smart, adult-oriented science fiction, which a certain contingent of cinephiles have an unending appetite for.

Mute is directed by Duncan Jones and stars Alexander SkarsgårdPaul Rudd, and Justin Theroux. It will be released through Netflix worldwide on February 23rd, 2018.
