MOTHER! Trailer

Darren Aronofsky returns to his bread-and-butter with Mother!, a psychological horror film long shrouded in secrecy.

Few people navigate the genre’s high wire like Aronofsky, whose go big methodology makes for ambitious stories with genuinely disturbing elements. Think about his previous efforts that get name-dropped in this trailer. Black Swan is rife with spine-tingling body horror and still landed Natalie Portman an Oscar while the descent in Requiem for a Dream is so upsetting that people label the film an anti-drug PSA.

So yeah, Darren Aronofsky doing psychological horror is worth getting excited for, and his reputation means that he attracted top talent in all departments. Jennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer lead Mother!, which has such a deep cast that the trailer only scratches the surface. How Domhnall Gleeson and Kristen Wiig fit in remains a mystery, and in a move that will certainly delight many, Aronofsky is pairing for the first time with composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

The trailer makes Mother! out to be quite the mind bender, and there’s something about using the formal moniker for a mom that’s subtly odd. Maybe it’s a hangover from Psycho, but there’s no way the titular mother is being yelled at for anything good.

Mother! is directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, and Ed Harris. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on September 15th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
