Awards season means big names, and the players behind Molly’s Game are as big as, well, the players that attended Molly Bloom’s games.
Jessica Chastain steps into the role of the real-life organizer of a high stakes poker game, one that catered exclusively to the wealthy and the famous in New York and Los Angeles. A savvy woman making her way in a man’s world might sound like textbook Chastain (and it will likely garner her more awards attention), but she’s not the only one keeping things familiar.
No, the fiercely amitious and intelligant characters in Molly’s Game feels textbook for Aaron Sorkin, too. That means more of his signature dialogue, but as he takes over the director’s chair for the first time, questions inevitably arise. Will he be able to translate his script’s cadence from page to screen? Will everything get overwhelmed by his strong style? Or will he even have a visual style to match his script?
There’s literally zero precedence for Sorkin’s directorial turn, because despite being a recognizable writer of the big and small screen, he hadn’t even helmed an episode of television before taking on this film. That’s why, despite the cavalcade of sturdy names tossed around in this trailer, Molly’s Game still feels like a risk. Sure, Chastain and Idris Elba should nail everything the script gives them, but the real gamble is whether Sorkin can handle his own idiosyncratic material.
Molly’s Game is directed by Aaron Sorkin and stars Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Kevin Costner. It will be released in the U.S. on November 22nd, 2017 and in the U.K. on December 26th, 2017. Further release dates are not currently known.
