MISS BALA Trailer

Gina Rodriguez gets a big screen vehicle in Miss Bala, a remake of the 2011 film of the same name.

The movie will allow her to stretch her action muscles, as its tale of a woman sucked into a world of drugs, gangs, and double-crossings sets up plenty of opportunities for her to kick butt. She’s ostensibly not part of this world, only becoming involved after her best friend is captured and held as collateral by a Mexican gang. She’s forced to complete a mission so bold it puts her in the crosshairs of the DEA, who in turn force her to go undercover to spy on the gang’s leader. It’s one of those twisty films about the border war, one that can carry plenty of weight while also delivering some serious thrills.

The film is a bit of a comeback for director Catherine Hardwicke, whose market power skyrocketed after launching the Twilight series but quickly crashed when her follow-up, Red Riding Hood, failed with critics and audiences. Years of pinballing around ensued, which eventually got her to the modest success of 2015’s Miss You Already and finally this potential moneymaker.

Make no mistake, Miss Bala is being targeted at a wide audience, hoping to appeal to action junkies just as much as to America’s growing Hispanic audience. Rodriguez’s extensive TV work means she familiar to everyone in the states, and this film will be a nice barometer for just how much her name can sell projects.

Miss Bala is directed by Catherine Hardwicke and stars Gina RodriguezIsmael Cruz Córdova, and Anthony Mackie. It will be released in the US on February 1st, 2019 and the UK on February 8th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
