MEDUSA Trailer

Religious fervor goes too far in Medusa, the latest from co-writer/director Anita Rocha da Silveira.
With their strict adherence to religion, Mariana and her friends naturally stick together. They reject the wilder things young women their age do, only reject might be too light a word. By day they preach against it, but by night they don masks and attack other women who aren’t behaving to their standards. They’re a group you can’t abandon lightly, so when Mariana starts having doubts she must investigate her community with the utmost secrecy.
This is a horror film, yes, but the trailer lets you know early and often that this isn’t an oppressive, grimy affair. Silveira injects color and twisted whimsy into the strange tale, aiming to make Medusa into a striking examination of religion, feminism, and the uncomfortable ways those two forces meet.
It’s a bold take for her second outing, but it builds upon the eclectic horror stylings she brought to her first film, Kill Me Please. Also retained is a star of that film, Mari Oliveira, who plays Mariana. Co-starring with her is Lara Tremouroux, Joana Medeiros, and Felipe Frazão.
With a second striking film to her name and the attention of major festivals to help get them far outside her native Brazil, it would be a good idea to keep up with what Silveira is doing.
Medusa is directed by Anita Rocha da Silveira and stars Mari Oliveira, Lara Tremouroux, and Joana Medeiros. It will be released in the US on July 29th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
