MARRIAGE STORY Trailer

It’s not just happily every after in Marriage Story, the latest from writer/director Noah Baumbach.

The film follows a couple going through how many marriages end: divorce. However, Baumbach isn’t going for a prickly, one-sided battle. Instead, both parties get their grievances, their pains, and their lingering doubts. Basically, the film is trying to show how complicated splitting up a family really is, especially when the rift cannot be complete.

If getting all that right seems impossible to do without baring your soul, then Baumbach probably agrees with you. Reports are that he drew from his own divorce and the divorce of his parents to weave such a nuanced tale, and even outside of that tidbit, it sort of feels like one he’s been building to this. Baumbach’s known for his family-centric films, especially unhappy ones, and he’s seemingly gotten his more caustic takes out of the way. His movies have softened of late, making an equally sympathetic divorce tale seem like an almost logical step.

His strong filmography means he’s got the pick of the litter when it comes to actors, so it’s no surprise that he landed Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver for his leads. Even the supporting cast is stacked, with Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Julie Hagerty, and Merritt Wever all appearing.

And yeah, there’s more good news. You’ll have the chance to see this in theaters or on Netflix before the end of the year.

Marriage Story is directed by Noah Baumbach and stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. It will be released in theaters in the US on November 6th, 2019 and worldwide on Netflix on December 6th, 2019. For international theatrical release dates, click here.
