Angelina Jolie dons the horns again for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the continued exploration of Sleeping Beauty’s iconic nemesis.

The film takes place after that whole spinning wheel curse, so the relationship between Aurora and Maleficent is sure to be rocky. Even though Maleficent’s motherly love woke Aurora up, Aurora still needs to get past the death of her father while Maleficent has to contend with the gnawing pull of evil. You don’t just bounce back from cursing a child, and as their lands are threatened, Maleficent must figure out how to protect them without losing what she has gained.

As one of Disney’s live-action reimaginings, this is a big budget affair, and the man tasked with reigning in all the moving pieces is director Joachim Rønning. Luckily, he’s had experience with massive productions, with this film coming hot on the heels of his first Hollywood movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Make no mistake, though, this is Jolie’s film, and she cuts quite the striking image as one Disney’s biggest baddies. Also returning is Elle Fanning as Aurora, with the major additions being Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michelle Pfeiffer. And really, who doesn’t want to watch Pfeiffer and Jolie square off?

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, and Ed Skrein. It will be released in the US and the UK on October 18th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
