Modern-day fame and the never-changing requirements of romance collide in Mainstream, the latest from co-writer/director Gia Coppola.

When Link, Frankie, and Jake have a brush with online fame, a mad scramble ensues to keep it going. Being internet famous is lucrative but fickle, but Link, it turns out, has the right kind of charisma to be a star. Frankie and Jake think they can keep the whole thing organized, but as their business grows and their lives get entangled professionally and romantically, it becomes nearly impossible to keep everything in line.

Yes, it’s one of those Coppola’s leading us through this examination of fame. It’s something anyone in the reigning family of the American film industry would know about, and Gia seems to focus her films on things she knows. Her previous feature, Palo Alto, was about being young and bored in California, and many hailed it as a promising start to another Coppola’s career.

Much like her first film, there’s no lack of star power in front of the camera, either. Andrew Garfield continues his increasingly odd career as the showman Link while Maya Hawke and Nat Wolff play the simultaneously impressed and frustrated Frankie and Jake, respectively.

Together, this makes for an undeniably stacked team. Hopefully, that means they can bring some unique observations to dramedy about fame.

Mainstream is directed by Gia Coppola and stars Andrew Garfield, Maya Hawke, and Nat Wolff. It will be released in the US in theaters and on-demand on May 7th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
