MAGGIE’S PLAN Trailer

Maggie’s Plan is a Woody Allenish movie starring a Woody Allenish actress, but you don’t need me to tell you that. This trailer never looks away from its neurotic New York bumbling, a world populated by professors and writers trying to bend life to their will. Allen has rode this formula through a long career, paving the way for offbeat performers like Maggie’s Plan lead Greta Gerwig. She’s even stared in one of his films, 2012’s Damsels in Distress, but his influence on her career could be seen long before that.

The rest of the film is made up of people flowing in and out of this particular kind of rom-com. Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore (with a thick Danish accent), Bill Hader, and Maya Rudolph all dip their toes in the style, while writer/director Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, The Ballad of Jack and Rose) also departs from her previous filmography.

It’s clear that Miller got the feel down cold, and I’m happy to report that she kept the film to a crisp 98 minute runtime. Still, it’s smart to cast Gerwig as the lead. Not only is she assured to knock it out of the park, but the very way she delivers lines and moves her body would provide an unwavering rudder for the specific tone they’re trying to hit. That makes Maggie’s Plan a sure bet if you like Allen and all of his offshoots.

Maggie’s Plan is directed by Rebecca Miller and stars Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, and Julianne Moore. It will be released in the U.S. on May 20th, 2016 and in the U.K. on July 8th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
