MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM Trailer

It’s all music and passion in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the latest from director George C. Wolfe.
Being in the studio wasn’t a simple thing for Ma Rainey. As one of the first well-known blues singers, she was breaking ground in all sorts of ways. That means the industry didn’t get her, let alone respect her, and she had to fight to get her music on record. Doesn’t help when one of her horn players has ideas of his own, or when the temperature in the recording studio hits sweltering levels.
If that sounds like a very contained look at the legendary singer’s life, well, that’s because it is. Based on a play by the great August Wilson, it’s designed to be a pressure cooker, so it’s fitting that they got someone familiar with both stage and screen like Wolfe to retain Wilson’s feel.
This gives Viola Davis a hell of a part as Ma, but people’s eyes will almost certainly catch on Chadwick Boseman as the ambitious horn player. It will be the beloved actor’s last film, a concept that’s hard to swallow after his death earlier this year. Hopefully, the film will send him off right.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is directed by George C. Wolfe and stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, and Glynn Turman. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on December 18th, 2020.
