M3GAN Trailer

Life finds a way to kill you in M3gan, the latest from director Gerard Johnstone.

Talky Tina, I mean M3gan, wasn’t supposed to be part of Gemma’s family. After all, she was a robot at the toy company Gemma worked for, but when Gemma’s sibling died and she ended up with custody of her niece, having a companion for the girl seemed like a good idea. So M3gan came home, and robot and girl became close. Too close, blurring the lines of an appropriate human-robot relationship and prompting M3gan to murderously malfunction.

This movie looks ludicrous, and from what I can tell, it’s supposed to be ludicrous. The screenplay is from Akela Cooper, the writer behind last year’s bonkers horror masterpiece Malignant, and Johnstone’s previous feature was the horror comedy Housebound. Both come from the scary but not serious stuff, which is the energy you want in a killer doll movie.

Staring as the befuddled aunt is Allison Williams, Violet McGraw as her niece, and Amie Donald as M3gan. Will any of them be asked to do much? Probably not the first two, but newcomer Donald will have to stiffen up and then shake it off as the titular bloodthirsty robot, hopefully to the great delight of us all.

M3gan is directed by Gerard Johnstone and stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, and Amie Donald. It will be released in the US January 13th, 2023. For international release dates, click here.
