LUCY IN THE SKY Trailer

Noah Hawley takes us out of this world in Lucy in the Sky, the television creator’s debut film.

Based loosely on the true story of Lisa Nowak, the film is primarily about an astronaut’s return to Earth. Her experience in space was life-changing, and that makes going back to the day-to-day incredibly difficult. If you are familiar with Nowak’s story, then you know that it spins far away from what is hinted at in this trailer, but it seems clear that this will be a more thoughtful take on her psychology versus the salacious way the media handled her breakdown at the time.

This probably won’t surprise anyone familiar with Hawley, who created the TV shows Legion and Fargo. Those are known for being enrapturing shows with many nooks and crannies to explore, and that seems to be the kind of deep dive that Lucy in the Sky is going for.

This attention to character is likely what attracted Natalie Portman to the lead part, who will have a lot of interesting things to work with (or work against in the case of that hair). Joining her is a strong support cast that includes Dan Stevens, Jon Hamm, and Zazie Beetz.

This trailer doesn’t give away how the more attention-grabbing event of Nowak’s life will be handled, and considering how key that is to her story, it’s hard to say exactly what this film will actually be like. The trailer is playing it coy, and that in and of itself is an interesting spin on the material.

Lucy in the Sky is directed by Noah Hawley and stars Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, and Dan Stevens. It will be released in the US in 2019. For further release information, click here.
