Love After Love may be centered on a death, but it might not be as tragic as you think.
From the trailer, it appears to take a long view of grief, following a family as the patriarch dies and the rest are left to carry on. It’s a quiet talker, one where the characters are intimately observed and the small moments pack a big punch. We all recognize the package as soon as the trailer sets off on its languid pace, but this one has elements that make it stand out.
First and foremost there’s Andie MacDowell, a longtime favorite of most film fans who hasn’t been getting her due of late. Playing the central widower ostensibly gives her the strongest role she’s had in years, and many people will be rooting for a resurgence in her career. The other thing that pops is Chris O’Dowd playing against his comedic norm as her eldest son.
Love After Love premiered to outstanding reviews at Tribeca last year, with the expected enthusiastic praise of MacDowell and kind words for first-time feature director Russell Harbaugh. These earlier viewers claim the style doesn’t let down the performers, so while this film may not be getting a huge release, it might be worth tracking down.
Love After Love is directed by Russell Harbaugh and stars Andie MacDowell, Chris O’Dowd, and James Adomian. It will be released in the U.S. in theaters and on demand on March 30th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
