LOUDER THAN BOMBS Trailer

If you haven’t seen Norwegian writer/director Joachim Trier’s previous films, Reprise and Oslo, August 31st, then clear your plans for the evening, track down these films, and settle in for some feels. They’re two of the most empathetic films of recent years, applying complex emotional landscapes to potentially unlikable young men. In doing so, Trier and co-writer Eskil Vogt capture just how vulnerable we are to life’s blows and remind us that people deserve more compassion than we often mete out.

Trier wraps these thoughts in an arthouse, new wave package, playing with structure and composition in ways that never exist simply for flash. They are both remarkable, confident films from any way you wish to approach them, marking Trier as an arthouse megastar in development.

The next step on that path is Louder Than Bombs, his English-language debut featuring his most experienced cast to date. It’s more high-profile nature led to a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and the requisite festival circuit run, and now that it’s time for its international roll out, it’s weirdly hitting theaters within a few weeks of star Jesse Eisenberg’s other film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Maybe he can slip in some shout-outs to this little film while he’s on that behemoth’s press tour?

Even without that weird coincidence, Louder Than Bombs should place Trier’s work in front of a larger audience. The trailer looks like it’s taking from a similar playbook as his previous films, so hopefully it serves as an apt introduction to a very accomplished career.

Louder Than Bombs is directed by Joachim Trier and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Devin Druid, and Isabelle Huppert. It will be released in the U.S. on April 8th, 2016 and in the U.K. on April 22nd, 2016. International release dates can be found here.
